Dubai is the second largest of the seven Emirates, is a desert city-state on the shores of the beautiful Arabian Gulf, replete with clean, sandy beaches and clear, blue-green waters. It has an ancient heritage that survives amidst the skyscrapers and highways of a modern, cosmopolitan city of almost 700,000 people. This 'Pearl of the Arabian Gulf', concentrated mainly on its exquisite creek, the finest natural shelter in 1600km (1000 miles) of coastline, ranks as the UAE's most important port and commercial center.

Climate
Dubai enjoys an arid subtropical climate, with blue skies and sunshine all year round. The hottest months are between June and September, when temperatures can soar to 113°F (45°C) and more during the day and humidity levels are very high. Even the sea temperature touches on 104°F (40°C) during the summer months, and swimming pools at hotels are usually cooled to be refreshing. Temperatures are only slightly more moderate the rest of the year, the coolest time being between December and March. There is very little rainfall in Dubai, but when showers do fall it is mainly in the cooler months.

Language
The official language of Dubai is Arabic. It is an ancient language. Among Muslims, Arabic is considered sacred or revered as the Koran is written in Arabic. It is the official language for both written and verbal communication, especially in government offices and affairs. In addition, the other widely spoken languages are English, Hindi, Urdu, Persian etc.

Population
Approximately, 85% of the actual total expatriate population and 71% of the Dubai’s total population are Asians. In that Indians are about 51%, Pakistanis around 16%, Bangladeshis are about 9% and Filipinos are 3%. Westerners comprise of about 3% of the total expatriate population

What to wear
Dubai is very liberal, but it's still a Muslim city. Long, light trousers and t-shirts/shirts with collar are appropriate for malls, museums, souks, etc.
