The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls lying 600km Southwest of Sri Lanka at the Southern tip of India. The Maldives archipelago is made up of about 1,200 small coral islands in the Indian Ocean, more than 1,000 of them uninhabited and none of them much above sea level.
Climate
The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and many hours of sunshine. With an average temperature of 31°C and an average minimum temperature of 26°C there are only minor variations in daily temperature throughout the year. The hottest month on average is April and the coolest December. February is the driest with December through Aril being considered generally to be the driest months.
Dress & Clothing
Dress is casual. Light cotton clothing is recommended, except on special occasions or for those that wish to dress elegantly when staying at luxury hotel, casual is the norm. Dress modesty when visiting inhabited islands out of respect. Nudism is prohibited.
Language
Dhivehi is the language spoken in all parts of the Maldives. English is widely spoken by Maldivians and visitors can easily make themselves understood getting around the capital island. In the resorts, a variety of languages are spoken by the staff including English, German, French, Italian and Japanese.
Time Difference
The Maldives is GMT +5 hours. However, Kuredu, Komandoo & Vakarufalhi resorts operate on what they call "Island Time" which is GMT +6 hours. This is so that clients get an earlier start, and therefore see more daylight during their time on the islands.
